Kick your bad habits, land your next client.

Content, design & marketing roles + more.

I’ve been reflecting on my bad habits this month, and I’ve noticed that many of them are rooted in the same core behaviors: moving too quickly, taking on too much, and forgetting the “why” behind it all.

Reflecting on my work habits led to a broader reflection about freelancing in general. As freelancers, we manage so much. We’re often juggling clients while seeking new ones. We’re wearing all the hats and trying to keep pace with a growing list of tasks and responsibilities. It’s easy to get stuck in perpetual hustle mode, especially if there are some deeper beliefs about scarcity and hyper-independence lurking beneath that hustle.

When we make decisions from a place of fear, we often set ourselves up for failure. Stretch goals like “Apply for 10 jobs today!!” might sound good when we pen them into our to-do list, but they can come back to haunt us at the end of the day if we’re exhausted and dejected because we pushed ourselves too hard and we still weren’t able to meet our own expectations.

If we’re just trying to reach an arbitrary number or check something off a list in order to feel productive, we’re probably not being thoughtful or realistic. And we might lose sight of the bigger picture — what we’re really trying to accomplish.

So, here’s a little nudge for you at the end of this week. As you move forward, think about the why behind what you’re doing. Do you really want to land that next gig? If so, spend some time slowing down, perfecting your pitch, doing your research, and crafting a killer portfolio. Don’t send a flat, unengaging note like you’re racing through a predetermined to-do list. Pause. And proceed with more intention and clarity.

Let’s break our bad habits together!
